SUMMARY:Three Weeks of Mourning - Fasting
DESCRIPTION:Today\, we fast and pray for the coming of Messiah JESUS\, our Savior.\nThe Holy Bible tells us that when JESUS approached Jerusalem\, He wept over the city because its people rejected God’s messengers. \nEarlier\, as Luke recorded\, He cried and said: \n“O Jerusalem\, Jerusalem\, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings\, and you were not willing!” (Luke 13:34). \n“And when JESUS drew near and saw the city\, he wept over it\, saying\, “Would that you\, even you\, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you\, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground\, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you\, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” Luke 19:41-44 \nWe know that Jews fast on this day\, that today Jews worshipped Golden Calf and in the sorrow and pain Moses broke the Holy Tablets. The fast of the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz\, known as Shivah Asar B’Tammuz\, is the start of a three-week mourning period for the destruction of Jerusalem and the two Holy Temples. \nThe Five Tragic Events That Occurred on This Date\n\nMoses broke the Holy Tablets after he saw the Jewish people worshipping the Golden Calf.\nDuring the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem\, the Jews stopped offering the daily sacrifices because they no longer had sheep.\nApostomos burned the Holy Torah.\nAn idol was placed in the Holy Temple.\nThe Romans breached the walls of Jerusalem in 69 CE after a lengthy siege. Three weeks later\, despite the Jews’ courageous resistance\, the Romans destroyed the Second Holy Temple on the 9th of Av. The Jerusalem Talmud also records that the Babylonians breached Jerusalem’s walls on this same date before destroying the First Temple.\n\nShabbat suspends all the laws of mourning. This includes the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av. When either fast falls on Shabbat\, people postpone it until Sunday and celebrate Shabbat with joy. \nMany regard the destruction of the Holy Temple as the greatest tragedy in human history. God will bring ultimate redemption through its rebuilding\, restoring harmony within His creation and between Himself and His creation. \nWith the coming of Moshiach\, we will understand that every suffering served God’s ultimate purpose. The prophets foretold that these days of mourning will become days of joy. Every Shabbat gives us a foretaste of the Messianic Era. Therefore\, on Shabbat we focus on the hope and joy that God has promised. \nMay we soon witness the fulfillment of the prophecy: \n\n“I will turn their mourning into joy and will comfort them and make them rejoice from their sorrow” (Jeremiah 31:12). \n\nThe Characteristics of YAH: \nAnd the LORD YAHWEH said\, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you\, and I will proclaim my name\, the LORD\, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy\, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But\,” he said\, “you cannot see my face\, for no one may see me and live. Then the Lord said\, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by\, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. SUMMARY:Tisha B'Av - The Day of Fasting and Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Tisha B’Av is a The Day of Fasting and Prayer and mourning that commemorates the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Primarily\, it remembers the destruction of the First Temple\, built by Solomon and destroyed by the Neo-Babylonian Empire. It also commemorates the destruction of the Second Temple by the Roman Empire. \nHistorical Tragedies\nIn addition to the destruction of the Holy Temple\, Tisha B’Av marks several other tragic events in Jewish history. These include: \n\nThe destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians (586 B.C.E.).\nThe destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans (70 C.E.).\nThe crushing of the Bar Kokhba Revolt and the fall of Betar (133 C.E.).\nThe expulsion of Jews from England (1290).\nThe expulsion of Jews from Spain (1492).\n\nTogether\, these events have made Tisha B’Av the principal day of national mourning in the Jewish calendar. \nTraditional Observances\nDuring Tisha B’Av\, observant Jews keep a 24-hour fast and refrain from activities associated with comfort or pleasure. As a result\, the day is devoted to mourning\, prayer\, and reflection. \nFasting\nFirst\, no food or drink is consumed. The fast begins at sunset and continues until after nightfall on the following day. \nPhysical Restrictions\nFurthermore\, observant Jews refrain from bathing for pleasure and from marital relations. Likewise\, other practices that provide comfort or enjoyment are traditionally avoided. \nPrayer and Worship\nThroughout the day\, special prayer services focus on mourning\, repentance\, and remembrance of the destruction of the Holy Temple. \nTorah Study\nHowever\, Torah study is limited to sorrowful passages. For example\, many people study texts describing the destruction of the Temples\, along with selected passages from Job and Jeremiah. \nBiblical References\n2 Kings 25:8–9\nThis passage records the Babylonian destruction of the First Temple. Specifically\, it provides the historical timeline that corresponds with the month of Av. \nKey passage: \n“In the fifth month\, on the seventh day of the month… Nebuzaradan\, the captain of the bodyguard\, a servant of the king of Babylon\, came to Jerusalem. And he burned the house of the Lord and the king’s house and all the houses of Jerusalem…” \nJeremiah 52:12–13\nSimilarly\, this parallel account records the destruction of the Temple. However\, it states that the Temple was burned on the tenth day of Av. According to the Talmud\, the destruction began on the ninth of Av and continued into the tenth. \nZechariah 8:19\nMoreover\, this passage refers to the established fasts observed after the Babylonian exile. In particular\, the “fast of the fifth month” is traditionally understood as Tisha B’Av. \n“Thus says the Lord of hosts: The fast of the fourth month and the fast of the fifth and the fast of the seventh and the fast of the tenth shall be to the house of Judah seasons of joy and gladness and cheerful feasts.” \nNumbers 13–14\nAccording to Jewish tradition (Mishnah Taanit 4:6)\, the first tragedy associated with the Ninth of Av occurred after the twelve spies returned from Canaan. Their discouraging report caused the Israelites to fear entering the Promised Land. Consequently\, God decreed forty years of wandering in the wilderness. \nFurthermore\, Rabbinic tradition records God’s response: \n“You wept tonight for no reason; I will establish this night as a night of weeping for generations.” \nHaftarah Readings\nMorning Haftarah — Jeremiah 8:13–9:23\nIn the morning\, this reading mourns the nation’s moral decline. At the same time\, it warns of judgment\, exile\, and the consequences of abandoning God’s covenant. \nAfternoon Haftarah — Isaiah 55:6–56:8\nBy contrast\, the afternoon reading shifts from mourning to hope. It first calls the people to repentance. Then\, it promises future redemption. Finally\, it looks forward to the rebuilding of God’s house as a place of worship for all nations.
